Join Suvira McDonald from Studio Suvira in Mullumbimby for a demonstration that offers insight into his ceramic practice. Suvira will demonstrate the construction of a large vessel, using the technique of rolled slabs.
Slab building involves rolling out flat sheets of clay, which are then cut, shaped, and joined to form a vessel. When creating a large piece, each slab is carefully handled to prevent warping or cracking, and the form is gradually constructed, piece by piece, with time and intention. The angular joins, essential to the method, are scored, slipped, and refined, revealing traces of the maker’s hand while allowing for architectural scale and strength. This method balances structure with form, offering a canvas for subtle surface textures and sculptural expression.
