Anagama Woodfiring Q&A

Venessa will lead a tour and in-depth discussion of her Anagama wood kiln, offering insight into every stage of this traditional firing method. She’ll begin by sharing the story of the kiln’s construction, detailing the planning, materials, and labor required to build such a structure. She’ll then explore the often overlooked task of gathering and preparing the large quantities of wood needed to fuel a firing.

Participants will be guided through the demanding process of woodfiring, where the kiln must be carefully stoked and maintained at high temperatures for over 100 hours. Venessa will explain how the interaction between flame, ash, and heat creates the distinctive surfaces and textures unique to woodfired ceramics.

Throughout the tour, Venessa will offer personal insights into her approach and connection to the process, shaped by years of experience. She’ll also speak about the collaborative spirit central to firings at Middle Pocket, where shared effort and support create a strong clay community.

This event is a rare opportunity to learn directly from an artist deeply engaged with the tradition of wood firing and to gain a better understanding of the time, skill, and community it takes to bring these remarkable ceramic works to life.
