Jenn Johnston Ceramics
Jenn lives and works on Bundjalung Country in Mullumbimby. Influenced by Japanese aesthetics and mid-century modern design, she creates refined, architectural ceramics. Her practice is driven by a search for pure form, and her work sits at the intersections of texture and tone, surface and shape, function and art.
Jenn's functional pieces are high fired for durability and her range has been refined over years of making - these are the forms she returns to in her own daily life, and the ones her collectors keep coming back for. Intended to become part of the daily rituals of life, they balance simplicity, function and character.
Her sculptural work is a quieter pursuit - forms that emerge slowly, guided by an instinct for simplicity and stillness. Left unglazed or finished with slip, the raw character of the clay is allowed to remain present and speak for itself. Making is where Jenn finds calm, and her hope is that these pieces carry something of that feeling with them - an invitation to pause, and simply be.
Each piece, whether functional or sculptural, is made with a single intention: to create a form that is complete in itself.
Jenn's processes span a range of hand building techniques. She works from her home studio nestled in her garden, and loves to welcome visitors to her space. Her work is collected locally, nationally and internationally, and is stocked in galleries and design stores across Australia.
