Ben Ruble - Wild Nature Clay
Ben has been a potter for over thirty years. Working from his off-grid studio in the hills of Upper Main Arm, what sets his work apart begins in the ground: he hand-harvests his own clay from the land around Mount Jerusalem — digging, settling and processing it himself — before throwing, glazing and gas-firing every piece on site.
Today Ben specialises in handmade ceramic sink basins — distinctive, wild-clay vessels created for homes and crafted in collaboration with interior designers, architects and builders across Australia. Alongside the basins he produces bespoke dinnerware and sculptural work, and offers private wheel-throwing lessons and Raku workshops for adults and children.
Originally from America, Ben earned a BA in Philosophy in 1996 and a Masters in Education in 1998, where he first fell in love with clay on the wheel. He spent three years as a resident artist in Napa, California, learning traditional wood-fire methods, before moving to Australia in 2012. He went on to create and teach the claywork program at Shearwater, the Mullumbimby Steiner School, from 2013 to 2021.
A father working from home in the Northern Rivers, Ben remains grounded by the landscape his clay comes from — and by the family who share the studio with him.
