Raku Firing Demonstration

Join Elaine Richter for a demonstartion of Raku firing.

Raku firing is a traditional Japanese pottery technique that involves removing ceramics from the kiln while they are still glowing hot and placing them into a combustible material like sawdust or newspaper. This rapid cooling process, often done outdoors, creates dramatic, unpredictable surface effects such as crackles, smoky patterns, and metallic glazes. Celebrated for its raw beauty and imperfection, Raku reflects a deep connection to the elements of fire, earth, air, and water, embodying spontaneity and embracing the unexpected.
